The Commonwealth Oil & Gas Induction Program “Abuja 2020” ceremony with the theme: “Hydrocarbon Contaminated Areas & Exploration of the use of Coconut Fiber for Remediation & Clean-up” took place on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at the conference hall of the Nicon Luxury Hotel Abuja, Nigeria by 4 pm as planned. Participants including academics, geoscientists, oil, and gas software developers, oil & gas managers, oil and gas engineers, environmental managers, downstream, midstream, and upstream operating administrators, etc attended the event. Those who delivered lectures did justice to the subject matter. For example, Engr. Prof. Peter Ukpaka who was the Lead Lecturer describes crude oil as a product that is made of high molecular weight hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon substances such as oxides of sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, metallic compounds, and some volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, xylene, etc. He said the application of coconut fiber for remediation and clean-up of the contaminated area involves the concept of bioremediation. He revealed that bioremediation engineering is good for the execution of remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soil because it is a process of enhancement of the natural remediation by adding micro-organisms to the soil (bio-augmentation) or oxygen, nutrient, or mineral salts for growth of the micro-organisms resident in the soil (bio-stimulation). Prof. Ade Ekundayo, the head of the station (Africa & middle east), INAC international finance group, Washington, united states of America (USA) discussed practical strategy for the engineering of finance for the oil & gas sector.
